Ontario’s Cosmetic Pesticides Ban Ontario’s Cosmetic Pesticides Ban takes effect April 22, 2009. The Ministry of the Environment is responsible for administering and enforcing the ban. Banned pesticides cannot be used for cosmetic purposes on land, including lawns, vegetable and ornamental gardens, patios, driveways, cemeteries and in parks and school yards. It replaces municipal By-laws. Approximately 250 pesticide products (Class 8) are banned for sale and over 80 pesticide ingredients (Class 9) are banned for cosmetic purposes. Over 100 pesticide products are identified as controlled sales (Class 7) and require information to be given to the consumer at the time of purchase informing them cosmetic uses are illegal. The lists of banned or controlled sales products are on the Ministry’s website at www.ontario.ca/pesticideban and selecting "pesticide classes". There are exceptions for agricultural operations, golf courses, forestry, health or safety reasons, protecting trees and native/rare plants and animals, lawn bowling and other specialty turfs, and sports field used for national/international sports competitions. Public Education The ministry’s website, www.ontario.ca/pesticideban, is an important source of information for anyone impacted by the ban, including gardeners. Communities in Bloom Ontario is organizing Healthy Lawns and Gardens – Going Pesticide Free, a free seminar series, to give Ontarians advice and practical tips on caring for lawns and gardens using greener alternatives. The Town will list information as to date/nearest location when further information is received. Enforcement Enforcement of the pesticides ban is the responsibility of Ministry of Environment’s environmental officers. To report an incident, call the ministry district office during regular business hours: Phone: 1-800-387-8826 or 519.948.1464 Please note that the Town does not have jurisdiction with respect to enforcement of the ban and the Compliance Officer and other staff will not be responding to complaints/inquiries.
